当晚，养羊人悄悄地躲在角落，手里拿一根木棍，准备在狼进来时一棍打下去，把狼活生生地打死。当狼进来，扎到爪子的时候，养羊人就一棍打了下去，狼立刻一命呜呼了。
养羊人想起被狼吃掉的羊的时候，心里就很不好受。于是，他想到一个十全十美的好办法。把这只狼的皮扒下来，挂在羊圈门口，让所有的狼见到后都害怕。果然如此，狼看到同伴的皮挂在羊圈上，吓得急忙就跑。
从此以后，亡羊补牢的故事就慢慢传下去。虽然养羊人不是很聪明，但是他的办法很管用。
